Born in Paris, architect and designer Charlotte Perriand is one of the most influential furniture designers of the early modern movement. After famously initially being refused a job at Le Corbusier’s studio, receiving the renowned retort “we don’t embroider cushions here”, Perriand’s design prowess was initially overlooked; it was only when she exhibited her innovative ‘The Bar under the roof’ installation at Salon d’Automne that she was able to convince Le Corbusier of her talent, resulting in an offer of a position at his studio.
At 24-years-old, she began a 10 year-long collaboration with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, at the famous design studios at 35, rue de Sèvres in Paris. Her presence at the studio is evident in every piece of furniture she collaborated on. Perriand became a cornerstone in the reformation project promoted by the architect, introducing a humane touch to the Le Corbusier’s signature cold rationalism.
Through her creations, she demonstrated her talent for the discovery and use of new materials, and subsequently how to harness their qualities to the full extent. Throughout her illustrious career, Perriand designed furniture pieces that became archetypes in their respective genres. Her designs include the innovative Applique à Volet Pivotant wall lights – perfect for Parisian apartments – and the Tabouret Méribel stools, which were famously inspired by local architecture.

Originally designed in 1928, this timeless modernist design is also known as the Basculant Chair. With its sculptural shape and comfortable arm rests, the chair is undoubtedly ahead of its time.
Crafted from a chromed tubular steel frame that supports the black hairyskin sling seat and leather arm rests, the LC1 Armchair is lightweight and perfectly balanced. The taut back rest and seat offer optimal comfort thanks to the visible tubular steel springs that support it.
