Founded in 1935 by husband and wife design duo Aino and Alvar Aalto, along with fellow idealists Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl, Artek was created with an aspiration to ‘promote a modern culture of living’. Taking its name from a synthesis of ‘art’ and ‘technology’ - concepts that were central to the international modernist movement of the 1920s - its founders aimed to unite the two entities and stay at the forefront of the intersection between design, architecture and art.
Today, Artek works and collaborates with renowned Finnish masters and an array of leading international designers, constantly developing and creating new production methods and aesthetic effects. Widely considered as one of the world’s most innovative brands, Artek remains at the cutting edge of design, offering an eclectic collection of iconic furniture, lighting and accessories.
Opening its first store in 1936, Artek’s original showroom in Finland exhibited a unique curation of inspirational objects, from both its own collection and that of likeminded brands. The store was also extended to include Gallerie Artek; a connected gallery space that was home to numerous exhibitions until the 1990s, including the work of Picasso, Calder and Miró, which achieved the brand’s mission of breaking down barriers and creating a synthesis of the arts.
A333 Turnip Pendant Light
Specially curated for Helsinki's National Pensions Institute building, the A333 'Turnip' Pendant Light was designed by Alvar Aalto in the 1950s.
Named after its distinctive organic shape, the light comprises a powder-coated steel shade and lacquered steel ring, its circular recesses emphasising its rounded form while distributing a warm glow.
