Inspired by the suspension mechanisms found in vehicles, Anglepoise lamps have remained icons of lighting design since their 1930s conception. A quintessentially British brand, for nearly a century Anglepoise has produced an incomparable series of instantly recognisable task lamps.
George Carwardine did not set out to design one of the world’s most famous lamps. A renowned automotive engineer, a curious Carwardine developed his concept for balancing weights using springs, cranks and levers and chanced upon the means to create an articulated task lamp from his garden workshop. After patenting his ‘constant spring’ technology, the first Anglepoise lamp was unveiled in 1933 to much acclaim and high demand.
Developing Carwardine’s archetypal design for the Type 3 series, Sir Kenneth Grange described the Anglepoise lamp as a ‘minor miracle of balance.’ Responsible for some of Britain’s most successful designs, from the Kenwood Mixer to the updated London taxi, Sir Kenneth Grange has been Design Director of Anglepoise since 2003, overseeing the brand’s eminent collaborations with institutions such as Sir Paul Smith, Margaret Howell, and the Roald Dahl Museum.
